From March 14 to 16, 2025, the Faculty of Computer Science at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow had the honor of hosting distinguished representatives of the British academic and technology communities. The guests included leading scientists and experts from the University of Cambridge and Goodenough College in London. The visit aimed to strengthen academic ties, exchange experiences, and explore new avenues for cooperation in the field of digital innovation and future technologies. 

 

Key Guests 

Prof. Sir Andy Hopper FRS – A Visionary of the Digital World 

Sir Andy Hopper is one of the most influential figures in the fields of computer science and technology. As the long-time director of the Cambridge Computer Laboratory, he played a crucial role in the development of modern computing systems and IT infrastructure. He is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Technology at the University of Cambridge and an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall and Corpus Christi College in Cambridge. Over the years, he has served as Treasurer and Vice-President of the Royal Society and was a member of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. 

Prof. Rob Mullins – An Expert in Computer Architecture and Open Hardware 

Professor Rob Mullins is a lecturer in Computer Architecture at the University of Cambridge and the founder and director of lowRISC, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of open-source hardware and software. He played a key role in projects such as OpenTitan, the first open-source hardware platform ensuring the security of integrated circuits. 

Prof. Alison Smith – A Pioneer in Biotechnology and Sustainable Development 

Professor Alison Smith from the University of Cambridge is a world-class expert in microalgal biochemistry. Her research focuses on the metabolism of vitamins and cofactors, as well as the application of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering in developing new industrial applications. 

Alan McCormack – Dean of Goodenough College in London 

Since 2015, Alan McCormack has served as the Dean of Goodenough College in London, overseeing the academic, social, and cultural development of the college’s doctoral student community. 

 

Doctoral Students from Goodenough College 

In addition to the top-tier scientists, AGH’s Faculty of Computer Science also hosted 14 doctoral students from Goodenough College, who are conducting research at leading universities in London. 

High-Level Collaboration 

The meeting was an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences and showcase AGH’s achievements on an international scale. Discussions focused on the Digital Commons concept and the Open Hardware initiative, both promoted by Prof. Andy Hopper. 

Long-Standing Relationships and Future Prospects 

It is worth noting that AGH’s Faculty of Computer Science has been collaborating with the University of Cambridge for over 40 years. This year’s visit strengthened existing relationships and opened new avenues for collaboration in technological innovation, artificial intelligence research, and open digital platforms.
