Topic: Variational quantum state diagonalization and reinforcement learning
Abstract
The development of variational quantum algorithms is crucial for the application of NISQ computers. Such algorithms require short quantum circuits which are more amenable to implementation on near-term hardware. The variational diagonalization method provides an important algorithmic subroutine which can be used directly for working with data encoded into quantum states, for instance in the problem of extracting entanglement properties of a system. We utilize reinforcement learning to minimize the depth of a quantum circuit required in the quantum state diagonalization task. To achieve this, we utilize a novel encoding method which can be used to tackle the problem of circuit depth optimization using a reinforcement learning approach. We demonstrate that our method provides solid approximation qualities while using a significantly shorter circuit.
