Engineers from the Faculty of Computer Science of AGH University took second place in the IV National Competition of The Polish Information Processing Society (PIPS) for the best thesis and engineering projects in Computer Science. The CityTransit application written by Dawid Liberda and Marcin Kozub under the supervision of Maciej Wozniak, Ph.D., won the jury's recognition due to its functionality, ease of use and user-orientation.
CityTransit is a system designed to support passengers in a dynamic public transportation network by offering a variety of urban transportation services. It includes user-oriented features, real-time information integration and innovative functionality. CityTransit, which is an extension of an existing application for public transportation passengers in Nowy Sącz, is being developed as a completely new system specifically for the residents of Krakow.
Our market research and interview analysis revealed several shortcomings of existing solutions, especially in terms of their ability to eliminate traffic difficulties. In addition, it includes a machine learning algorithm that estimates the travel time of buses and streetcars. During the development of this application, the priorities were performance, intuitive operation, usability, reliability and the ability to integrate with external data sources. The system consists of a cross-platform mobile application developed based on the Flutter framework and a back-end server with a microservices-based architecture in Python running on a Kubernetes cluster. These two components are connected using gRPC, a modern open-source remote procedure call (RPC) protocol known for its performance. McRAPTOR, DeepTTE, Ball Tree algorithms were also implemented, and integration tests were performed on the mobile application to ensure code quality.
The application has been running successfully for several years in Nowy Sącz. Now the graduates of the AGH Department of Computer Science are trying to introduce it in Cracow. We keep our fingers crossed for success and the fastest possible implementation in the capital of Małopolska!
