Temat: Quantum correlations, local realism and scientific foundations. What puzzles last year’s Nobel Prize in Physics refers to?

Abstract

Quantum mechanics allows quantum correlations – also called quantum entanglement – that are stronger than all the correlations we know from our daily lives. Their enigma has already troubled fathers of Quantum Mechanics.

Einstein's ingenious skepticism about this theory gave rise to the fundamental philosophical question - formalized mathematically by John Bell - about the objective existence of  properties of quantum particles before measurement. Schrodinger's reflection on quantum entanglement was the beginning of the information-theoretic description of quantum correlations.

Last year’s Nobel Prize concerns fundamental experimental developments of the theoretical ideas along the above paths. We will follow them, showing in particular, how they are related to some puzzles regarding our understanding of quantum mechanics and the laws of Nature in general.

 

Bio

Paweł Horodecki is a professor of physics at the Gdańsk University of Technology working in the field of quantum information theory. He is best known for introducing the Peres-Horodecki criterion for testing whether a quantum state is entangled.
